Cylinder Head Replacement - Right or Rear

Removal Procedure





1. Perform an engine compression and leak down test. Refer to Engine Compression Test and Cylinder Leakage Test.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
4. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Upper).
7. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
8. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
9. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement.
10. Remove the right (rear) spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Powertrain Management.
11. Remove the fuel line bracket.
12. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Starting and Charging.
13. Remove the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement (Tensioner Assembly) in Starting and Charging.
14. Remove the right (rear) spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Powertrain Management.
15. Remove the right (rear) exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Right).
16. Remove the right (rear) cylinder head baits.
17. Remove the right (rear) cylinder head.





18. Remove the right (rear) cylinder head gasket.
19. Clean the following areas:
^ The gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head, cylinder block, and intake manifolds.
^ The cylinder block bolt threads.
^ The cylinder head bolts.

Installation
^ Tools Required
- J 36660 Electronic Torque Angle Meter





1. Install a new right (rear) cylinder head gasket.





2. Install the right (rear) cylinder head over the locator pins and over the gasket.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





3. Tighten the right (rear) cylinder head bolts, (1-8) in sequence.
^ Tighten the cylinder head bolts (1-8) in sequence to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
^ Use the J 36660 in order to turn the cylinder head bolts (1-8) in sequence an additional 90 degrees.

4. Install the right (rear) exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Right).
5. Install the right (rear) spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Powertrain Management.
6. Install the right (rear) spark plug wires to the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Powertrain Management.
7. Install the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement (Tensioner Assembly) in Starting and Charging.
8. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Starting and Charging.
9. Install the fuel line bracket.
10. Install the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement.
11. Install the pushrods and valve rocker arms. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
12. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
13. Install the upper intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Upper).
14. Fill the engine with new engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
15. Fill the cooling system with engine coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
