Parking Lock Cable: Service and Repair
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Console as necessary.
3. Place shift lever in "Park" (P).
4. Turn ignition key to "RUN" position.
5. Left sound insulator and knee bolster as necessary.
Important
- Do not do Step 6 with key in any other position.
6. Slip a screwdriver blade into slot provided in ignition switch inhibitor, depress cable latch and pull cable from inhibitor.
7. Pull cable adjuster locking button at shift control bracket to the "up" position.
8. Snap cable from park lock lever pin on shift control assembly by pulling rearward on cable end
9. Depress two cable adjuster tangs and remove from shifter control assembly.
10. Cable clips.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. With the cable adjuster locking button in the "up" position and shift lever in the "PARK" position, snap cable connector into shifter control bracket. Ensure two cable adjuster tangs are fully engaged.
2. With ignition in "RUN" position, snap cable into inhibitor housing.
Important
- Do not attempt to insert cable with key in any other position except "RUN."
3. Turn ignition key to "LOCK."
4. Snap cable end onto park lock lever pin on shift control assembly.
Adjust
- Be sure ignition key is in "LOCK" position. Note: If the key can not be rotated to the "lock" position, lift the adjuster locking button and slide the adjuster rearward in car (compress spring) and hold-rotate key to lock.
- Be sure the cable adjuster locking button is in the "up" position.
- Grasp the park lock cable near the forward end of adjuster spring. Push it toward the front of the vehicle to remove slack and release.
- Move cable adjuster rearward in vehicle 1.5 mm (1/16 inch) from the position established in the previous step.
- While holding this position, push the adjuster locking button down flush with the adjuster body.
5. Left sound insulator and knee bolster.
6. Console.
7. Negative battery cable.
Important
Perform these steps to verify correct functional operation of park lock system.
1. Assure the ignition key is in the "OFF/LOCK" position (position the key can be removed).
2. Attempt to shift out of "PARK" - if you can shift out of "PARK", readjust park lock cable.
3. Turn the ignition key to the "RUN" position.
4. Shift to "NEUTRAL".
5. Attempt to turn the ignition key to "OFF/LOCK" and remove key. If you can turn the key to "OFF/LOCK" and remove key, readjust the park lock cable.
6. Return the shifter to "PARK" and the ignition key to "OFF/LOCK".
7. Attempt to remove the key, if you can not remove the key, readjust the park lock cable.
