Valve Spring: Service and Repair

TOOL REQUIRED
^ J 41512 Valve Guide Installation Tool
^ J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor
^ J 23590 Spark Plug Port Adapter

REMOVAL
1. Remove the left valve rocker arm cover.
2. Remove the right valve rocker arm cover.

CAUTION: Rotate the engine so that the piston in the cylinder being worked on is at top dead center before removing the valve locks. This will eliminate the possibility of the valve accidentally falling inside the cylinder.

3. Remove the rocker arm and push rod.
4. Remove the spark plug wires. See Powertrain Management.
5. Remove the spark plug. See Powertrain Management.
6. Install Spark Plug Port Adapter to the spark plug port and apply compressed air in order to hold the valves closed.
7. Compress the valve spring using Valve Spring Compressor.





8. Remove the valve locks.
9. Remove the valve spring and cap.
10. Remove the valve stem oil seal.
11. Inspect the valve spring for bent, cracked or broken parts. Replace it if damaged.

INSTALLATION
1. Place the oil seal over the stem until the seal begins to contact the valve guide.

CAUTION: Use hand pressure only when installing the valve stem oil seal using Valve Guide Installation Tool. Using too much force may cause damage to the oil seal and possibly lead to excessive oil consumption. The color of the replacement seal may not be the same color as the original seal. Install the seals in their correct location based on GM part and package description. Ensure that the seal is fully seated on the valve guide.

2. Push the valve stem oil seal over the valve guide using Valve Guide Installation Tool.
3. Compress the valve spring using Valve Spring Compressor.
4. Install the valve spring and cap.
5. Install the valve locks.
6. Release the valve spring.

CAUTION: Ensure that the valve keys are seated.

7. Release the air pressure, and remove Spark Plug Port Adapter.
8. Install the spark plug. See Powertrain Management.
9. Install the spark plug wire. See Powertrain Management.
10. Install the push rod and rocker arm.
11. Install the left valve rocker arm cover.
12. Install the right valve rocker arm cover.
