Removal and Replacement

^ Tools Required:
- J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
- J 28467-94 Engine Support Fixture Adapter
- J 28467-330 Engine Support Fixture Adapter
- J 28467-350 Engine Support Fixture Adapter
- J 37292-B Axle Seal Protector

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Air cleaner cover.
3. Transaxle electrical connector.
4. Shift control cable bracket with cable attached.
5. Top transaxle case bolts.
6. Top bolt from rear transaxle mount.
7. Left side steering rack mount bolts.
8. Oxygen sensor connector.





9. Install J 28467-A engine support fixture.

Important: "Load" the support fixture by tightening the wing-nuts several turns to relieve tension on the frame and mounts.

CAUTION: To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle Is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle at the opposite end from which components are being removed. This will reduce the possibility of the vehicle falling off of the hoist.

10. Raise vehicle and suitably support.





11. Both front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to STEERING AND SUSPENSION.
12. Left splash shield assembly. Refer to BODY AND FRAME.
13. Power steering line bracket from engine frame.
14. Right splash shield to engine frame fastener.
15. Left transaxle mount from engine frame.
16. Right transaxle mount from engine frame.
17. Right steering rack mount bolts from engine frame.
18. Tie off and support steering rack to the exhaust with mechanics wire.
19. Transaxle cooler lines from engine frame.
20. Sway bar mounts from lower control arms. Refer to STEERING AND SUSPENSION.
21. Left and right lower ball joint nuts. Separate lower ball joints from steering knuckles. Hand tighten nuts back on ball joints.
22. Engine frame bolts.
23. Ball joint nuts and lower engine frame.
24. Remove left and right drive axles from transaxle.
25. Torque converter cover.





26. Flywheel to torque converter bolts.

Important: Mark flywheel to converter relationship to ensure proper reassembly.

27. Input speed sensor electrical connectors.





28. Engine to transaxle bracket.
29. Transaxle fluid filler tube.
30. Rear engine mount.
31. Remaining transaxle to engine bolts.





32. Transaxle from vehicle.





INSTALL OR CONNECT
- To complete installation, observe the following assembly tips and reverse the removal procedure.

ASSEMBLY TIPS
- Use care when installing right side drive axle into the transaxle case. The splined shaft can easily damage the seal.

Important:
- Before Installing right side drive axle, be sure to install tool J 37292-B axle seal protector.
- Line up the flywheel to torque converter marks made at disassembly.
- Torque converter to flywheel bolts should always be tightened twice. The final torque should be 62 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
- Check adjustment of the shift cables. Re-adjust as needed.
- After installing front wheel and tire assemblies, torque wheel nuts to specifications. Refer to STEERING AND SUSPENSION.
- Check and adjust the fluid level as needed.
- Road test and check for leaks.
- When installing transaxle to engine block brace, tighten brace to engine bolts first and brace to transaxle case last to avoid pulling transaxle case out of line.
