Left Side (Front)
Tool Required:J 36660 Torque/Angle Meter
Important
^ During disassembly, be sure that the valve train components are kept together and identified so that they can be installed in their original locations.
^ Before remove the cylinder head(s) from the engine and before disassembling the valve mechanism, make a compression test and note the results.
Intake Bolts:
Remove or Disconnect
1. Relieve fuel system pressure.
2. Negative battery cable.
3. Drain and recover coolant.
4. Top half of air cleaner assembly and throttle body duct.
5. Exhaust crossover heat shield.
6. Exhaust crossover.
7. Valve rocker covers.
8. Intake manifold.
9. Left exhaust manifold.
10. Oil level indicator.
11. Pushrods.
Important
^ Place pushrods in order so they can be installed in their original position.
12. Cylinder head.
Inspect
^ For cylinder head inspection procedures.
Clean
^ Mating surfaces on cylinder head, cylinder block and intake manifold.
^ Cylinder block bolt threads. Cylinder head bolts.
Install or Connect
1. Place the gasket in position over the dowel pins, with the note "This Side Up" showing.
2. Cylinder head.
3. Coat cylinder head bolt threads with GM P/N 1052080 sealer or equivalent, and install bolts.
Cylinder Head Installation:
Tighten
^ Head bolts in proper sequence as illustrated.
4. Intake gasket.
5. Pushrod(s) loosely retained with rocker arms (installed correct length pushrods).
^ Install pushrods in their original location.
^ Coat the ends of the pushrods with prelube GM P/N 1052356.
^ Intake pushrods are marked yellow and are 5-3/4" long.
^ Exhaust pushrods are marked green and are 6" long.
^ Make sure pushrods seat in lifter.
6. Rocker arm bolts.
7. Intake manifold.
8. Valve rocker covers.
9. Oil level indicator.
10. Left exhaust manifold.
11. Crossover pipe.
12. Crossover heat shield.
13. Fill cooling system.
14. Top half of the air cleaner assembly and throttle cable duct.
15. Negative battery cable.
