Removal and Replacement

REPLACE
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove air intake duct.
2. Disconnect cruise control cable at throttle body, then shift control cables and brackets from transaxle.
3. Disconnect vacuum line and electrical connectors from transaxle.
4. Remove exhaust crossover pipe, then heater hose retainer bracket.
5. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector, then remove top transaxle to engine bolts.
6. Install engine support fixture tool No. J-28467-A or equivalent, then raise powertrain slightly to relieve tension on mounts.
7. Raise and support vehicle, then remove both front wheels.
8. Remove left steering rack mounting bolts, then left front splash shield.
9. Remove left and right ball joint mounting nuts, then separate both control arms from knuckles as described under Steering and Suspension.
10. Remove lower front air deflector, then power steering line brackets at frame.
11. Remove right side steering rack through bolt, then support frame with a suitable jack.
12. Remove right and left transaxle mount through bolts, then frame from vehicle.
13. Remove flywheel cover, place match marks on torque converter and flywheel, then remove torque converter to flywheel bolts.
14. Disconnect, then remove starter.
15. Disconnect connector at speed sensor.
16. Remove drive axles from transaxle as described under Front Wheel Drive Axles.
17. Support transaxle with a suitable jackstand, then remove rear transaxle mount.
18. Disconnect right side spark plug wires from sparkplugs, then remove transaxle filler tube.
19. Remove right exhaust manifold, then lower transaxle to engine bolts.
20. Disconnect transaxle oil cooler lines, then remove rear transaxle mount bracket.
21. Remove transaxle from vehicle.
22. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten to specifications.
b. Ensure torque converter to flywheel match marks are aligned, then tighten bolts to specifications in two steps.
c. Tighten engine to transaxle brace engine bolts first, then transaxle bolts to prevent improper engine to transaxle alignment.
d. Use seal protector tool No. J-37292-B when installing right axle to transaxle.
