Case Side Cover and Gaskets
CASE SIDE COVER AND GASKETSREMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Park/neutral position switch connector.
3. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
4. Left front wheel and tire assembly.
5. Inner splash shield.
6. Tie rod end from knuckle assembly.
7. Stabilizer shaft link from lower control arm.
8. Ball joint from steering knuckle.
9. Drive axle from transaxle.
10. Pinch bolt from steering gear intermediate shaft.
CAUTION: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control which could result in an accident and possible personal injury.
11. Intermediate shaft from steering gear.
12. Position a transmission jack under transaxle oil pan. Raise jack until it supports transaxle.
13. Three frame-to-body bolts on left side.
14. Lower the transmission jack and transaxle to gain access to the case side cover.
15. Oil cooler pipes at case.
16. Side cover bolts.
17. Case side cover.
CLEAN
^ Case and side cover gasket surfaces
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New gaskets on case.
2. Side cover and new bolts.
TIGHTEN
^ Side cover bolts to 11 Nm (98 inch lbs.).
3. Oil cooler pipes.
TIGHTEN
^ Ball check fitting to 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.).
^ Pipe fitting 38 Nm (28 ft. lbs.).
4. Raise transaxle so frame bolts can be installed.
5. Three frame-to-body bolts.
TIGHTEN
^ Frame-to-body bolts to 112 Nm (83 ft. lbs.).
6. Remove transmission jack.
7. Intermediate shaft to steering gear.
8. Pinch bolt at intermediate shaft.
9. Drive axle.
10. Ball joint to steering knuckle.
11. Remove drive axle seal protectors.
12. Stabilizer shaft link to lower control arm.
13. Tie rod end to knuckle.
14. Inner splash shield.
15. Left front wheel and tire assembly.
16. Lower vehicle.
17. Park/neutral position switch connector.
18. Negative battery cable.
INSPECT
^ For leaks.
^ Fluid level.
