Left Side (Front)

LEFT (FRONT) CYLINDER HEAD

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

NOTE: Before removing the cylinder head(s) from the engine and before disassembling the valve mechanism, perform a compression test and note the results.

During disassembly, be sure that the valve train components are kept together and identified so that they can be installed in their original locations and with the same mating surfaces as when removed.

Rocker Arm Assembly:

Cylinder Head And Valve Train:

1. Air cleaner.
2. Negative battery cable.
3. Drain coolant.
4. Intake manifold.
5. Valve cover.
6. Rocker arms and pedestals.
7. Valve guide plates and pushrods.
8. Engine torque strut from bracket, at head.
9. Vacuum line from transaxle module.
10. Left exhaust manifold.

CAUTION: Break lug loose and clean dirt and debris from the spark plug recess area before removing.

11. Spark plugs.
12. Generator front mount bracket and ignition module with mount bracket.
- Lay ignition module aside
13. Cylinder head bolts and cylinder head.
14. Clean:
- Mating surfaces on cylinder head, cylinder block and intake manifold.
- Cylinder block bolt hole threads using a 7/16-1/4 tap.
- Cylinder head bolt threads using a wire brush.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

NOTE:
Head gaskets are NOT interchangeable. Failure to install gasket with arrow pointing to the front will cause gasket failure and possible engine failure.

1. Position head gasket with arrow pointing to front of engine.
2. Cylinder head.
3. Apply sealant GM P/N 1052080 (or equivalent) to underside of bolt heads.
4. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345382 (or equivalent) to bolt threads.

CAUTION: This engine uses special torque to yield head bolts. This design bolt requires a special tightening procedure. Failure to follow the given procedure will cause head gasket failure and possible engine damage.

Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence:

5. New cylinder head bolts.
- Tighten Head bolts in proper sequence as illustrated in image.
- Head bolts to 50 Nm (37 lbs. ft.) in sequence.
- Rotate each bolt 120° in sequence using J 36660 or equivalent.
- Rotate the center four bolts an additional 30° in sequence using J 36660 or equivalent.

6. Pushrods and valve guide retainers.
7. Rocker arms and pedestals.
8. Valve cover.
- Tighten bolts to 10 Nm (88 lbs. in).

Intake Manifold Bolt Tightening Sequence:

9. Intake manifold.
10. Exhaust manifold.
11. Generator front mount bracket and ignition module with mount bracket.
12. Spark plugs and wires.
13. Engine torque strut.
14. Engine coolant.
15. Negative battery cable.
- Tighten bolt to 15 Nm (11 lbs. ft.).
16. Air cleaner.

NOTE: It is recommended that engine oil be drained and crankcase refilled with clean engine oil to avoid possible contamination by engine coolant and/or foreign material when removing cylinder head.

17. Inspect for proper fluid levels and check for leaks.
