DTC 61 BPM Valve Pump Motor Or Pump Motor Relay Malfunction (Part 1 Of 2):

DTC 61 BPM Valve Pump Motor Or Pump Motor Relay Malfunction (Part 2 Of 2):

DTC 61 BPM Valve Pump Motor Or Pump Motor Relay Malfunction:

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The pump motor returns brake fluid to the master cylinder brake hydraulic circuit at the BPM valve during antilock braking. During normal braking, the pump does not operate. When the vehicle begins to move after start-up, the EBCM will turn "ON" the pump motor and perform a self-check of the pump motor and pump motor electrical circuit. This check may be felt and heard by the driver when the vehicle begins to move. The self-check should be considered normal operation. The pump motor is an integral component of the BPM valve and cannot be serviced separately.
The BPM valve pump motor relay provides power to the pump motor in the BPM valve. The BPM valve pump motor relay is located on the BPM valve and may be replaced if it is found to be defective.

DTC 61 WILL SET WHEN
B+ is present at the pump motor without the pump motor being requested to activate, or if B+ is not present at the pump motor within 60 milliseconds after the pump motor has been requested to activate.

ACTION TAKEN
If a malfunction is detected which causes a pump motor/relay DTC 61 to set, antilock braking is disabled and the EBCM turns "ON" the ABS warning lamp for the remainder of the ignition cycle. if the malfunction is intermittent, the EBCM will enable the system at the next ignition cycle and a history DTC 61 will be present.

DTC CHART TEST DESCRIPTION
Number(s) below refer to circled number(s) on the diagnostic chart.
1. Checks for proper resistance of the relay coil.
2. Checks for relay contacts stuck closed.
3. Checks for relay contacts stuck open.
4. Checks the integrity of the circuits internal to the BPM valve.
5. Checks for an open in the pump "ON" input circuit.
6. Checks for an open in the pump motor relay coil switched ground circuit.
7. Checks for a short to ground in the pump "ON" input circuit.
8. Checks for a short to ground in the BPM valve pump motor relay coil switched ground circuit.
9. Checks for a short to B+ in the pump "ON" input circuit.
10. Checks for a short to B+ in the BPM valve pump motor relay switched ground circuit.
11. Checks for an open in the BPM valve battery feed circuit.
12. Checks for improper connections which may have set the DTC.
13. Checks that the pump motor is operational.
14. Checks for a DTC which set falsely.
15. Checks for a good pump motor ground circuit.
