Timing Chain and Sprocket




TIMING CHAIN, CRANKSHAFT AND CAMSHAFT SPROCKETS, AND WATER PUMP DRIVESHAFT

TOOLS REQUIRED:
* J 5825-A Crankshaft Gear Remover
* J 5590 Crankshaft Gear Installer
* J 39243 Water Pump Drive Shaft Remover
* J 41546 Water Pump Drive Shaft Installer
* J 39087 Driven Gear Shaft Front Cover Seal Protector
* J 39089 Driven Gear/Water Pump Shaft Seal Installer

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Water pump. Service and Repair
2. Engine front cover. Service and Repair
3. Reluctor ring (80) from crankshaft hub.
4. Rotate crankshaft until timing marks punched on crankshaft sprocket (62) and camshaft sprocket (57) are aligned as shown. Camshaft sprocket bolts/screws (56).
5. Camshaft sprocket (57) and timing chain (61).

NOTICE: Do not turn the crankshaft after the timing chain has been removed to prevent damage to pistons or valves.

6. Water pump bearing retainer bolts/screws (64) and water pump driveshaft (63) using J 39243.
* Remove and discard seal from water pump driveshaft (63).

7. Crankshaft sprocket (62) using J 5825-A.
8. Key, if necessary.

INSPECT
* Camshaft and crankshaft sprockets (57 and 62) and water pump driveshaft (63) for wear.
- One edge of teeth worn or teeth no longer concentric.
- Valley between teeth worn.
* Key and crankshaft keyway for wear.
* Timing chain (61) for binding.
* Timing chain (61) for signs of contacting engine front cover.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Key if previously removed.
2. Crankshaft sprocket (62) using J 5590.
3. Water pump (driveshaft (63) using J 41546.
^ Place J 41546 over the water pump shaft with the three fingers of the tool passing through the gear. Use a mallet to drive the shaft into the block casting.

4. Water pump bearing retaining bolts/screws (64).

TIGHTEN
Water pump bearing retainer bolts/screws (64) to 12 Nm (106 lb. in.).

5. Camshaft sprocket (57) and timing chain (61).
^ Camshaft sprocket and water pump driveshaft gears must mesh, or damage to camshaft retainer (59) could occur.

6. Camshaft sprocket bolts/screws (56).
^ Make sure that camshaft and crankshaft timing marks align as shown.

TIGHTEN
Camshaft sprocket bolts/screws (56) to 28 Nm (21 lb. ft.).

7. New seal to water pump driveshaft (63) using J 39089.
8. Reluctor ring (80) on crankshaft hub.
9. Engine front cover. Refer to "Engine Front Cover".
10. Water pump. Refer to "Water Pump".
