Door, Front - Will Not Open with Inner/Outer Door Handle

Group Ref.: Body

Bulletin No.: 431017

Date: April, 1994

SUBJECT:
FRONT DOOR MAY NOT OPEN USING EITHER INNER OR OUTER DOOR HANDLE (ADJUST BARREL NUT)

MODELS:
1994 BUICK REGAL
1994 CHEVROLET LUMINA
1994 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME
1994 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX

CONDITION:

Some owners may comment about the front doors not opening when using handles. This condition may happen on either front door.

CAUSE:

Outside handle lock rod barrel nut misadjusted.

IMPORTANT:
Opening the affected door:

1. Roll glass to the full down position.

2. On COUPES, place a plastic wedge, such as door stop, between the glass and outer belt seal to create a gap for access to the latch assembly. On SEDANS, place the wedge between the glass and Inner belt.

3. With a long flat blade screwdriver, locate the detent lever and rubber bumper (bumper may be yellow or white) on the latch (See Figure 1). Insert the screwdriver between the two and twist to move the detent lever outboard (See Figure 1).

4. The door will open when the lever is moved.

CORRECTION:

(SEDAN)

1. Remove trim panel.

2. Remove water deflector to gain access to the latch.

3. Remove outside handle barrel nut from the latch assembly. MAKE SURE ROD IS FULLY SEATED IN THE OUTSIDE HANDLE. Adjust the barrel nut on the end of the rod until attaching knob of nut aligns to the attaching hole in the lock lever of latch assembly.

4. Check operation of both inside and outside handle.

5. Reinstall water deflector and trim panel.

CORRECTION:

(COUPE)

1. With the door open, remove bezel covering the lock rods.

2. Remove outside handle lock rod from the door handle linkage. With the rod at ease and the linkage on the door handle in the full up position, adjust the barrel nut until the attaching knob of the nut aligns to the attaching hole in the door handle linkage. Push forward to reinstall.

3. Check operation of both inside and outside handle.

4. Re-install bezel.
