Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence:






LEFT
1. Remove intake manifold as outlined under Engine/Intake Manifold/Service and Repair.
2. Remove left exhaust manifold as outlined under Exhaust System/Exhaust Manifold/Service and Repair.
3. Remove oil level indicator, then plug wires from left cylinder head.
4. Loosen rocker arms, then remove pushrods. Intake and exhaust pushrods are different lengths with exhaust pushrods being longer of the two.
5. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then cylinder head, Fig. 6.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Coat cylinder head bolt threads with a suitable sealing compound.
b. Torque cylinder head attaching bolts to 33 ft. lbs. in sequence shown in Fig. 6.
c. Turn bolts and additional 1/4 turn in sequence shown in Fig. 6.
d. Tighten all bolts/nuts to specifications.

RIGHT
1. Remove intake manifold as outlined under Engine/Intake Manifold/Service and Repair.
2. Remove right exhaust manifold as outlined under Exhaust System/Exhaust Manifold/Service and Repair.
3. Remove plug wires from right cylinder head.
4. Loosen rocker arms, then remove pushrods. Intake and exhaust pushrods are different lengths with exhaust pushrods being longer of the two.
5. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then cylinder head, Fig. 6.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Coat cylinder head bolt threads with a suitable sealing compound.
b. Torque cylinder head attaching bolts to 33 ft. lbs. in sequence shown in Fig. 6.
c. Turn bolts and additional 1/4 turn in sequence shown in Fig. 6.
