Valve Spring: Service and Repair
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
Tools required:
^ J23590 Air line adapter.
^ J5892 Valve spring compressor.
^ J23738-A Tester.
1. Valve cover.
2. Spark plug.
3. Rocker arm.
4. Push rod.
5. Install air line adapter Tool 323590 to spark plug port and apply compressed air to hold the valves in place.
6. With tool J5892 compress the valve spring.
Disassemble
^ Valve locks.
^ Valve cap.
^ Oil shedder (exhaust valve only).
^ Valve spring.
^ Damper.
7. Valve stem oil seal.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Assemble
^ Valve damper.
^ Valve spring.
^ Oil shedder (exhaust only).
^ Valve cap.
^ Valve stem seal over the valve stem and valve guide base (intake only).
- Use plastic sleeve provided.
- Press over valve guide boss.
2. With tool J5892 compress the valve spring.
3. Square cut "0" ring around the valve stem in the lower groove, making sure it is not twisted.
CAUTION To prevent damage from twisting, coat seal with engine oil.
4. Valve locks. If necessary, hold them in place with grease.
5. Release valve spring.
Inspect
^ Make sure valve locks are seated.
^ With tool J23738-A, apply vacuum to the valve cap to make sure no air leaks past the seal.
5. Spark plug.
Tighten
^ To 24 Nm (18 ft. lb.)
6. Push rod.
7. Rocker arm.
Adjust
^ Valve lash.
8. Valve cover.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 6-8 Nm (4-6 ft. lb.).
