Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Front Cover:
Proper Parallel Alignment Of The Timing Chain Assembly:
SPECIAL TOOL REQUIRED (or equivalent)
^ J-37087, Crankshaft sensor adjusting tool.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable and drain engine coolant.
2. Serpentine belt.
3. Heater pipes and lower radiator hose from cover.
4. Coolant bypass hose from cover.
5. Raise car and suitably support.
6. Right front wheel and tire and inner fender splash shield.
7. Balancer bolt and balancer.
8. Electrical connections at:
^ Camshaft sensor.
^ Crankshaft sensor.
^ Oil Pressure sender.
9. Oil pan to front cover bolts.
10. Front cover attaching bolts and cover.
11. Clean gasket mating surfaces at timing chain cover, and cylinder block.
Inspect
^ Timing chain for overall "in and out" movement. Should not exceed 25.4mm (one inch).
^ Sprockets for wear.
^ Oil pan gasket. If oil pan gasket is excessively swollen, the oil pan must be removed and the gasket replaced.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Gasket at cylinder block and front cover.
2. Apply GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent to front cover bolt threads and tighten bolts to 30 Nm (22 lbs ft).
3. Oil pan to front cover bolts and tighten to 10 Nm (88 lbs in).
4. Adjust crankshaft sensor using J-37087.
5. Electrical connections at:
^ Camshaft sensor.
^ Crankshaft sensor.
^ Oil Pressure sender.
6. Balancer and bolt and tighten to 297 Nm (219 lbs ft).
7. Inner fender splash shield and right front wheel.
8. Lower car and connect coolant bypass hose.
9. Lower radiator hose and heater pipes.
10. Serpentine belt and fill cooling system.
11. Negative battery cable.
Inspect
^ For proper completion of repair.
^ For external fluid leaks.
