Timing Chain: Service and Repair

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Front cover, refer to Timing Cover / Service and Repair.
2. Camshaft thrust button.
3. Align timing marks on sprockets so that they are as close together as possible (figure 2, view B).
4. Timing chain dampner.
5. Camshaft sprocket bolts, sprocket and chain.
7. Crankshaft sprocket.
8. Clean timing chain and sprockets.

Inspect
^ All components for wear and/or damage.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Assemble timing chain on sprockets with timing marks in their closest together position.

NOTE: If the balance shaft timing has been disturbed, refer to Balance Shaft Timing below.

2. Timing chain and sprocket.
3. Camshaft sprocket bolts and tighten to 37 Nm (27 lbs ft).
4. Camshaft thrust button and spring.
5. Timing chain dampener.
6. Front cover.

Inspect
^ For proper completion of repair.
^ For fluid leaks.

BALANCE SHAFT TIMING
1. Turn the camshaft so, with the camshaft sprocket temporarily installed, timing mark is straight down.
2. With the camshaft sprocket and the camshaft gear removed, turn the balance shaft so that the timing mark on the gear points straight down.
3. Install camshaft gear.
4. Align the marks on the balance shaft gear and the camshaft gear by turning the balance shaft (figure 2, view A).
5. Turn the crankshaft so that number one piston is at top dead center.
