1986 RIVIERA
If the symptoms of a system do not match the ones in Fig. 25, test all the components in the system. Check the battery voltage before performing tests on any components in the system.
1. With the ignition switch OFF, check that battery voltage is present at the ORN/BLK wire in the ELC compressor assembly connector and the ELC height sensor connector.
2. Remove the ELC relay from the interior relay center with the ignition switch in RUN, measure the voltages to ground at position K in the interior relay center.
a. If Battery voltage is not at terminal 2, troubleshoot the BRN/WHT wire back to Fuse 18.
3. To test the actuator arm, raise car and check the following:
a. Link is attached to height actuator arm.
b. Wiring to ELC height sensor is intact.
c. Actuator arm height adjusting nut is tight.
4. To test the compressor motor, remove the ELC relay from the ELC relay center and connect a fused jumper between terminals 2 and 3 in position K. Turn the ignition switch to RUN:
a. If the compressor does not run, check the DK GRN and BLK wires for opens.
b. If no wiring problem is found, remove the ELC compressor assembly for repair.
5. To test the vent solenoid, remove the ELC height sensor and connect a fused wire from the WHT wire on the ELC height sensor connector terminal to ground. Leave the ignition switch in OFF position.
a. If the solenoid valve does not open and close, remove the ELC compressor assembly and repair or replace the ELC compressor assembly as needed.
b. If the solenoid operates and vents, and the actuator arm is operating correctly, but the system does not vent to lower the car, install a new ELC height sensor.
6. To test the ELC relay, with the relay plugged in the interior relay center, connect a fused jumper from the YEL wire at pin K of the Assembly Line Communications Link (ALCL) connector to ground. Turn the ignition switch to RUN.
a. If relay does not operate, install a new ELC relay.
b. If the relay is good (compressor runs) and the actuator arm operates correctly, but the system does not turn on when the car is low, install a new ELC height sensor.
