SUBJECT
6HP26 Transmission Fault 4F53
MODEL
E65/E66 with N62 up to 01/03 production (or up to transmission serial number 124057)
SITUATION
"Check Engine Light" is illuminated and fault code 4F53 ("Torque converter clutch solenoid incorrectly open") is stored in EGS transmission control module.
Please note this repair is only valid for vehicles with only fault code 4F53 stored. It will not repair shift quality issues or any other fault codes stored in conjunction with fault code 4F53. Please consult with the BMW Technical Hotline/Drivetrain in these instances.
CAUSE
Defective material of torque converter clutch disc.
CORRECTION
1. On a customer complaint basis only, interrogate EGS module fault memory
2. If fault code 4F53 is stored, then replace torque converter with the improved part (PN 24 40 7 559 120). For torque converter replacement procedure refer to RA 24 40 010 (found in BMW TIS).
3. In advance, have a container with transmission fluid and a pump ready for refilling. Use only the approved transmission fluid: "Shell M-1375.4"; PN 83 22 0 142 516.
4. Start the engine.
5. Remove transmission filler plug and immediately start filling transmission until trans fluid flows from the filling orifice. Check transmission fluid level according to repair instruction RA 00 11 500.
6. After the repair has been completed, clear transmission adaptation values using DIS/GT1.
