SI B 72 01 02
Safety Restraint Systems

February 2002
Service Engineering

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS, AND PRIOR TO RETAIL DELIVERY.

SUBJECT
Service Action to recode satellite sensor (SBSR)

MODEL
E65

SITUATION
The right-hand B-pillar satellite (SBSR) stores the characteristic curves for controlling the fuel pump.

A coding data error programmed a incorrect characteristic curve to the B-pillar satellite. The fuel pump is running with a reduced speed and makes resonance noises.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves certain E65 (7 Series) vehicles according to the VIN selection (Start of production to February 1, 2002).

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION
Recode SBSR

The procedure described below must be observed precisely. A deviation from this process can lead to a complete reprogramming of the control units.

2. Switch on ignition.

3. Start in CIP with "E65".

4. Select "Load Software

5. Press "No" for query "Have control modules been replaced in this vehicle".

9. Press "Yes" to start the Automatic Coding. A status report is displayed after coding is completed. Repeat the coding procedure if coding has failed.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 330 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-180) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 330 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
