SUBJECT
Service Action to Replace Airbag Control Unit (Satellite)

MODEL
E65, B66 (7 Series)

SITUATION
A small number of E65 vehicles have airbag control units or satellites which may fail prematurely.

In the event of failure, the airbag warning lamp will be illuminated in the instrument cluster.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves a limited number of B65 (745i) and B66 (745Li) vehicles from start of production to January 9, 2002.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

PROCEDURE

1. Determine faulty airbag control units or satellites from the vehicle identification number list. There is a maximum of (2) faulty airbag control units or satellites per vehicle.

2. Replace airbag control units as indicated.

For installation instructions refer to repair instructions:

Safety and information module (SIM), RA 65 77 700.

Driver's seat satellite (SSFA), RA 65 77 750.

Front right door satellite (STVR), RA 65 77 740.

3. Program the control units using CIP V 1.0, or later

Refer to SI B09 05 01, Coding, Individualization, Programming (CIP) for programming instructions

Note:
CIP will automatically program all programmable control units that do not have the latest software.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 335. Afier the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-180) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 335 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

[NEW] Note:
If this Service Action is being carried out at the same time as a Recall, or other Service Action, please maximize the use of each service action label by punching out the number(s) of all campaigns being performed on the same label. This will keep the "B" pillar as neat and uncluttered as possible

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

PARTS INFORMATION

Orders for parts specified may be placed as a VOR or stock order. Please place the VIN number in the comment field of your DCS order. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE VIN NOT BE USED AS THE P.O. NUMBER. THIS WILL PREVENT USING THE VIN AGAIN FOR SUBSEQUENT VIN SPECIFIC ORDERS. Additional Service Actions will affect many of the vehicles involved in this Service Action. ONLY ORDERS WITH A VIN WILL BE RELEASED. ALL OTHER ORDERS WILL BE CANCELLED.
