SUBJECT
Instrument Cluster and Control Display Revert to Metric Units

MODEL
E65, E66 7 Series

SITUATION
Intermittently the Instrument Cluster and Control Display may switch from US settings to metric. For example, the mileage display changes to kilometers or the temperature display changes to Centigrade. This is usually accompanied by symptoms of intermittent MOST bus failures. For example:

- Popping or crackling noise from speakers

- Control Display is dark or blank

- I Drive Controller is not responsive

- BMW logo is displayed permanently on Control Display

CAUSE
The Control Display reverts back to its default settings when communication is lost momentarily with other MOST bus modules.

PROCEDURE

First, the MOST bus symptoms must be diagnosed and repaired. Use the "Functional Description" in DISplus "Documents" for troubleshooting information. After the MOST bus has been repaired, follow the procedure as outlined below to recode the MMI (Control Display) with CIP version 29 or later.

1. When performing any Coding a BMW Battery Charger should be connected to the vehicle and set to PS mode (refer to SIB 04 11 02).

2. Switch Ignition to Terminal 15

3. Select "Coding/Programming"

4. Select "CIP"

5. Select "Load software"

6. Answer the query as to whether the part has been replaced with "No"

7. Press the "Cancel update" button in the "Status report" display

8. Select "MMI (Control Display)" from the menu bar on the right

9. Select the "Coding" menu and the "Recode" submenu

10. Start the coding process by pressing the "Start automatically" button

11. A status report is displayed once the coding is complete.
