SUBJECT
ZF 6HP26 - Diagnostic for Transmission Gear Monitoring Faults
MODEL
E65, E66 with N62 and 6HP26 up to 03/2003
SITUATION
Transmission warning light is illuminated and 6HP26 automatic transmission enters a fail-safe mode.
Any combination of "gear monitoring" faults may be stored in EGS memory (4F50, 4F51, 4F52, 4F56, 4F57, 4F58, 4F59, 4F60, 4F4F, 4F4E, 4F4D, 4F4C, 4F5F, 4F5E, 4F5D, 4F5B, 4F5A).
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
1. Check EGS for the presence of output speed sensor fault 4EE9. Follow DIS diagnostic plan if FC 4EE9 is found.
2. Check DME for any faults related to fuel sending units, especially in conjunction with "engine stalling" complaint related to running out of fuel. If engine stalls during driving due to running out of fuel, transmission output speed sensor and gear monitoring faults are going to be stored in EGS module.
3. Check transmission fluid level. If needed, top-off according to repair manual RA 00 11 500 using Shell M-1375.4 (P/N 82 22 0 142 516).
4. If you perform all the checks listed above and you find no defect, then the complete transmission needs to be replaced.
