Advance Information

SUBJECT
Transmission Warning in Instrument Cluster

MODEL
E65/E66 (7 Series)

SITUATION
The customer complains that intermittently the following warning is displayed in the Instrument Cluster:
"The transmission automatically shifts to P when the engine is switched off. Please contact your BMW center as soon as possible"

Fault code 51AC (CAN ID Sensor inserted) is stored in the EGS module.

CAUSE
Key inserted message is not transmitted by the CAS to the EGS

PROCEDURE
Using DISPlus/GT1, check for stored fault codes using "Short test".

Procedure 1:

If CAN communication fault codes are stored in addition to FC 51AC, carry out the BUS "System analysis" test plan (refer to SI B61 03 03). Diagnose and correct all faults. It is not necessary to replace the CAS unless this is diagnosed as faulty using the test plan.

Update the vehicle using the latest version of CIP. Refer to SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization and Programming) for any necessary coding and programming. Note that CIP will automatically reprogram all programmable control units that do not have the latest software.

Procedure 2:

If FC 51AC is stored in the EGS, and no other CAN communication fault codes are stored, replace the CAS and keys as a coded set.

Refer to SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization and Programming) for any necessary coding and programming. Note that CIP will automatically reprogram all programmable control units that do not have the latest software.
