Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign 03E-A01; E65/66 with N62, Ignition Coils Replacement

MODEL
E65/66; 745i, 745Li from start of production up to 09/30/2002

SITUATION
Internal insulation failure of BREMI ignition coils may cause reduced ignition firing power.

The customer may complain of erratic engine performance, and "Check Engine Light" being illuminated.

In order to remedy this situation, BMW is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to replace the defective coils in all affected vehicles.

Copy of customer notification letter is included.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Recall Campaign involves 745i and 745Li vehicles with N62 engines, which were produced from series introduction up to September 30th, 2002.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

On the affected vehicles check the manufacturer, and the production date of ignition coils. If required, replace affected ignition coils.

PROCEDURE

Only coils manufactured by BREMI are affected. BREMI coils are easily recognizable by all black, shiny housing.

Bosch coils, which can also be fitted in E65/66 vehicles, are not affected and should NOT be replaced.

Bosch coils have silver, aluminum housing.

On the affected vehicles check the manufacturer, and the production date of ignition coils.

Ignition coils manufactured by BREMI with a production date of 42/02 or earlier, must be replaced. For replacement instruction refer to RA 12 13 511 found in BMW TIS.

The last four digits stamped on the top of BREMI ignition coil housing, indicate the calendar week and year of production.

As shown on illustration: Week 42 2002

Ignition coils manufactured by BREMI with a production date of 43/02 or later, are not affected and should NOT be replaced.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
