SUBJECT
Service Action to Replace Central Gateway Module (ZGM)
MODEL
E65 (7 Series)
SITUATION
The ZGM module is the central communications gateway in the E65/B66. During CIP programming, it is responsible for routing new software to the appropriate control modules. With some ZGM modules, this communications process breaks down and causes the CIP programming to abort.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves B65/E66 (7 Series) vehicles produced from 25 February to May 3, 2002.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
1. Remove the Central Gateway Module (ZGM) (refer to repair instructions 65 77 690)
2. Check the hardware version "HW" (1) printed on the ZGM label.
If the hardware version is shown as HW 14, or higher, no further action is required
If the hardware version is shown as HW:13, replace the ZGM
[NEW] 3. Refer to SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization and Programming) for any necessary coding and programming. Note that CIP will automatically reprogram all programmable control units that do not have the latest software.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 341. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-205) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (I);
b. punch out code number 341 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
Note:
If this Service Action is being carried out at the same time as a Recall, or other Service Action, please maximize the use of each service action label by punching out the number(s) of all campaigns being performed on the same label. This will keep the "B" pillar as neat and uncluttered as possible.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via Campaign Entry.
