Service Engineering
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT
Service Action to Check Trunk Lid For Cracks
MODEL
E65 745i
SITUATION
Because of a short term problem with the tooling for the trunk lid stamping, some E65s built in the first week of January 2002 may have a crack in the inner panel of the trunk lid. If not corrected, this could allow water intrusion into the luggage compartment, or lead to corrosion damage inside the lid.
BMW is conducting a Service Action to inspect all potentially affected cars, and replace any lids found to exhibit the problem.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves 745i vehicles which were produced in the first week of January, 2002.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
Open the trunk lid and check the underside of the front edge of the lid on the passenger side as indicated in the illustration.
If a crack is evident, the lid must be replaced.
Note:
Inspection of vehicles so far indicates that a very small number of vehicles can be expected to exhibit this problem. If a vehicle with the problem should be encountered, schedule the customer to have the lid replaced at a later date. This will allow the lid to be ordered and prepared for installation, therefore the customer can be without their car for a minimum amount of time.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 326 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-180) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 326 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
