SUBJECT
Service Action to Replace the Antenna Amplifier and Remotes

MODEL
E65, E66 (7 Series)

SITUATION
The Remote Keys (868MHz) operate in a frequency range that is susceptible to interference. In some areas, interference may severely reduce the operating range of the Remotes. In the extreme case, the vehicle can no longer be opened or closed using the Remotes.

The vehicle can still be locked and unlocked using the key in the door lock.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E65 (7 Series) and E66 (7 Series) vehicles according to the VIN selection (start of production to March 7, 2002).

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION
Change the system operating frequency to 315MHz.

The change requires the replacement of the Remotes and the installation of a new Antenna Amplifier.

PROCEDURE

1. When customer appointment is scheduled, the customer must be asked to bring all Remotes for the vehicle, together with proof of ownership documents (Driver's License and Vehicle Registration) on the day of the appointment.

2. Order the necessary replacement parts so that the parts are available when the vehicle is dropped off for the service appointment. The "E65 REMOTE/AMPLIFIER ORDER FORM" must be used for all orders.

NOTE:
Provided that the customer has scheduled an appointment for this Service Action, orders may be placed for parts without seeing the necessary proof of ownership documentation. However, proof of ownership documentation must be provided before the vehicle is released to the customer. By signing the Order Form, the Service Manager is responsible for obtaining the proof of ownership documents prior to releasing the vehicle.

3. When the vehicle is dropped off for repair, for security reasons (because the Remotes are being replaced), the customer must provide proof of vehicle ownership (Driver's License and Registration of the vehicle). Copies must be made of both documents, and retained in the vehicle file. The BMW center must retain these copies for a minimum of five (5) years.

4. Replace the antenna amplifier - refer to repair instruction RA 65 20 220. The amplifier is located at the right side "C" pillar.

5. Replace and activate the new Remotes as follows:

a. Remove the mechanical key from the 868MHz remotes and install them in the new 315MHz Remotes.

b. To initialize the 315MHz Remotes, insert the 315MHz remote into the ignition lock one at a time. Hold the remote in the ignition lock until it is accepted (will lock in position). This process may take 10- 30 seconds. Start the engine, then check each 315MHz remote for correct functioning

6. Transfer the Key Memory Personalization Number into the new Remotes as follows:

7. Note: Do not return to the Parts Counter the 868MHz Remotes until the following procedure has been completed. The following procedure needs to be performed with CD30 or later. Before starting the procedure go into Vehicle and Key Memory (VKM) using CIP and print the stored key memory settings of the 868MHz remotes.

a. Enter into Diagnosis with DISplus/GT1 and perform short test.

b. Continue and select "Function Selection"

c. Select "Service Functions

d. Select "Body".

e. Select "Locking and security functions"

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 334. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-180) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1),

b. punch out code number 334 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

Note:
If this Service Action is being carried out at the same time as a Recall, or other Service Action, please maximize the use of each service action label by punching out the number(s) of all campaigns being performed on the same label. This will keep the "B" pillar as neat and uncluttered as possible

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

PARTS INFORMATION
Please use the attached order form for ordering these parts. The order form should be read prior to using it, as it contains important information for the processing of your orders. No orders via the DCS system will be accepted.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via Campaign Entry.
