Convertible Top Hydraulic Control Unit: Service and Repair



54 34 005 Removing And Installing/Replacing Hydraulic Unit For Convertible Top Drive

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove wheel arch cover at rear left.

Caution: Before hydraulic lines are opened, last opening and closing operation of convertible top must have taken place no earlier than 2 minutes beforehand.







Disconnect plug connection (1) and remove holder (2) from installation frame.
Release screws (3). Swivel hydraulic unit with installation frame out of installation position.

Installation:
If necessary, replace bushing (1) with rubber penetration (2).







Slacken nuts (1 to 3). Remove frame (4) from hydraulic unit.
Do not open oil filler plug (5) to bleed system.

Installation:
Tightening torques for
- Nuts (1, 2, 3):
3AZ Hydraulic unit to body or carrier 11 Nm

- Oil filler screw (5):
5AZ Oil filler plug to hydraulic unit 11 Nm






Caution:
- Place an absorbent protective cover underneath the hydraulic unit on the garage floor (risk of contamination by escaping fluid).
- Have a cloth ready to wipe away escaping oil.


Release banjo bolts (1) and (2).

Installation:
4AZ Lines to hydraulic unit 12 Nm

Note: If the hydraulic unit is replaced or remains removed for an extended period, the bores on the hydraulic unit and the hose connections for hydraulic cylinders must be sealed (see below).

To do so, use the plugs from the "Banjo bolts for hydraulic unit" kit (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service) and the old seals.







Installation:
Always fit new hollow union bolts and seals (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service).
1. Hollow screw
2. Upper seal (thin)
3. Lower seals (thick)
4. Hose connections







Installation:
Fit hydraulic lines (1) in pairs.

Observe color coding of hoses:
- Hoses with red lettering on hydraulic unit connection "red"
- Hoses with blue lettering on hydraulic unit connection "blue"
Check fluid level in hydraulic unit, top up if necessary.

Caution: If line connections on the hydraulic unit or the hydraulic lines remain open for an extended period of time (e.g. storage, waiting period), they must be protected against the ingress of moisture.
