Left Camshaft

(Intake or exhaust side as applicable)
Cylinder bank 5 to 8

Preliminary
Unscrew and remove splash guard.
Remove both cylinder head covers.Service and Repair
Remove all spark plugs. Service and Repair

Removal
Removal of camshafts is described separately from installation.

Remove piston for chain tensioner. Service and Repair
Remove top left and right timing case covers. Timing Case Cover Upper
Remove left camshaft adjustment unit. Left Camshaft Adjustment Unit
Remove distributor on left camshaft adjustment unit. Oil Distributor on Left Camshaft Adjustment Unit





Pull special tool 11 2 300 back until flywheel is no longer secured in position.
Note: X5 (E53) uses a new shorter version, part # 11 5 180.





Lift timing chain and hold under tension.

Note: Note markings!

Crank engine counter-engines on central screw into 45° before TDC position.





Remove special tools 11 2 444 / 443 / 442 / 446.





Caution: Do not damage the cylinder head.

If necessary, machine open-end wrench accordingly.





Rotate exhaust camshaft at hex head until exhaust cam at cylinder 6 faces upwards.
Rotate inlet camshaft at hex head until inlet cam at cylinder 8 faces upwards.

Note: The camshafts are now in the removal position.





Evenly release bearing covers on exhaust and inlet camshafts for cylinder bank 5 to 8 in 1/2 turn steps from outside to inside.

Caution: Do not mix up the camshaft bearing covers of cylinders 1 to 4 and 5 to 8.

Remove bearing covers on cylinder bank 5 to 8 and place to one side in order.
Lift out camshafts.

Installation
Installation of camshafts is described separately from removal.





Install exhaust and inlet camshafts on cylinder bank 5 to 8.
Rotate exhaust camshaft until exhaust cam at cylinder 6 faces upwards.
Rotate inlet camshaft until inlet cam at cylinder 8 faces upwards.





Caution: Do not mix up the camshaft bearing covers of cylinders 1 to 4 and 5 to 8.

Fit bearing covers.
The exhaust camshaft bearing covers are marked A1 to A5 from the inlet side.
The inlet camshaft bearing covers are marked E11 to E5 from the inlet side.





Evenly tighten down bearing covers on camshafts for cylinder bank to 8 in 1/2 turn steps from outside to inside.
Tightening Torque, refer to Engine, Specifications.





Rotate camshafts until camshaft markings face upwards.





Fit special tool 11 2 446 / 442 to camshafts on cylinder bank 5 to 8.





Caution: Do not damage the cylinder head.

If necessary, machine open-end wrench accordingly.
Align inlet and exhaust camshafts with an open-end wrench so that special tools 11 2 446 / 442 rest without a gap on the cylinder head.





Fit special tool 11 2 443 to special tool 11 2 446 / 442 and secure with special tool 11 2 444 using the spark plug thread.
Crank engine from the 45° before TDC position in direction of rotation up to TDC position.
Hold crankshaft in TDC position with special tool 11 2 300.

Caution: Remove special tool 11 2 300 before switching on the engine.
Note: X5 (E53) uses a new shorter version, part # 11 5 180.


Install distributor on left camshaft adjustment unit. Oil Distributor on Left Camshaft Adjustment Unit
Install left camshaft adjustment unit. Left Camshaft Adjustment Unit
Install top left and right timing case covers. Timing Case Cover Upper
Remove piston for chain tensioner. Service and Repair
Assemble engine.
