Removing and Installing Starter




Removing and installing or replacing starter (M52TU)

Note instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery. Refer to Service Precautions. Technician Safety Information

- Disconnect and cover battery negative lead.

- Remove intake filter housing






- Disconnect plug connection (1) on air mass flow sensor.
- Detach vacuum line (2) from intake hose.
- Release hose clip (3).






- Pull throttle cable upwards out of retainer (1) and unhook from throttle actuator.

Installation:
- Adjust throttle cable for throttle actuator, refer to Powertrain Management - Fuel Delivery and Air Induction - Throttle Cable/Linkage - Adjustments






- Release hose clamps (1).
- Detach intake hose piece from throttle assembly and idle-speed control valve.






If fitted:
- Remove engine underguard (1 and 2).






- To improve accessibility to starter, remove plastic hoses (1 and 2).

Installation:
- Clip fuel hoses (1 and 2) into holder (3).






- Release nuts (1) and disconnect lines.

Installation:
- Tightening Torque, refer to chart below

- Both starter mounting bolts are best released:
- Release starter mounting bolts from transmission output end with a long extension and a universal joint.

Installation:
- Tightening Torque, refer to chart below






- Remove starter (1) from transmission flange.
- Ensure that the sealing faces of the fuel lines (2) are not damaged.






- Remove starter (1) towards bottom past fuel lines.

Installation:






- Check starter pinion and starter crown gear for damage.
- Dismantling and reassembling starter motor, refer to Disassembling and Assembling Starter Motor Disassembling and Assembling Starter Motor
