SUBJECT:
ABS/ASC Warning Light On

MODEL:
E38, E39

Situation:
Some E38 and E39s produced from 9/98 to 3/99 may experience an ABS/ASC warning light on and the fault memory indicates:

-- "wheel speed (line)"/ "wheel speed (plausibility)"

-- fault code 67 "short term scatter"

-- fault code 112 "CAN fault"

Cause:
The ABS sensors installed in these cars may develop microscopic cracks in the plastic coating allowing moisture to penetrate the sensor, causing it to fail.

Correction:
The manufacturing process of the sensors has been improved, and these have been installed in production as of week 11/99.

In case of customer complaint in conjunction with the fault codes listed above, replace all four ABS sensors with the improved version.

The improved sensors can be identified by checking the date code on the sensor. Parts built day 063 of 1999 or later are the improved style.
