Installation of Interior Trunk Release Switch
MODEL
E46 (3 Series) 323i sedan
SITUATION
There is no interior trunk release switch on E46 323i sedans, and owners complain that it is not available as an option.
An interior trunk release switch can be retrofitted as a customer pay item. (The installation will take approximately 1 hour)
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the (6) screws holding the glovebox, and remove the glovebox.
2. Remove the finisher from around the LSZ module (Refer to Repair Instructions 51 16 221)
3. Remove the LSZ module.
4. Remove the driver's side door sill cover,
under-dash panel and kick plate (Refer to Repair Instructions 51 43 070).
5. From Repair Kit H (P/N 90 88 6 619 058), found in the Electrical Repair Kit, select:
-- One brown wire with female terminals (1)
-- One black wire with female terminals (3)
-- One butt connector (7)
-- One piece of shrink tubing (4)
6. Clip the female connectors from one end of each wire, and strip off 1/8" (3 mm) of insulation. Double crimp (wire crimp and insulation crimp) the wires to the butt connector (7) to join the wires together. Slide on the shrink tubing (4).
7. Complete the process by using a heat gun (1) to seal the connector.
8. Mark the wire assembly # 6.
Note:
The black end of the wire has an AMP female terminal, and the brown end of the wire has a Siemens female terminal.
9. Insert the black end of # 6 wire (female terminal), into position 6 of terminal housing
P/N 61 13 8 373 666 (1).
10. From Repair Kit H, select two black wires with female terminals. Mark one wire # 2, and the other wire # 5.
11. Insert # 2 wire female terminal into position 2 of terminal housing (1).
12. Insert # 5 wire female terminal into position 5 of terminal housing (1).
13 Assemble connector cover P/N 61 13 8 373 662 to complete the assembly of connector X1295.
14. Locate connector X748 at the driver's footwell light. Pull back the fabric tape to expose the brown ground wire (3). Use a Quick Connect (1), P/N 61 13 8 364 566, to connect wire # 5 to the brown wire (3). Trim off any excess wire # 5 flush with the Quick Connect.
15. Locate connector X12 at the LSZ module. Pull back the fabric tape to expose the gray/red panel illumination wire (3). Use a Quick Connect (1), P/N 61 13 8 364 566,to connect wire # 2 to the gray/red wire (3). Trim off any excess wire # 2 flush with the Quick Connect.
16. Remove the blank from the driver's side kick panel (1), and install the trunk release switch (3) P/N 61 31 8 365 579. Install connector X1295 completed in step 12.
17. Following the path of the main vehicle wiring harness, run # 6 wire over the top of the steering column and behind the center console, across to the General Module located in the electrical carrier behind the glovebox. Use nylon tie straps to secure # 6 wire to the main harness.
18. Remove connector X253 from the General Module.
19. Insert the brown end of # 6 wire (female terminal) into position 6 of connector X253, and reassemble the connector.
20. Reinstall all removed parts, and functionally test the trunk release switch for correct operation.
