Cruise Control

CRUISE CONTROL (FGR) E-31 VEHICLES

The cruise control signals for all functions are provided by a single wire from the cruise control switch.

The switch contains resistors with various set values for the different select positions. The control unit recognizes the desired function selected by the difference in the voltage level (signal) produced with each position.

The cruise control circuit is supplied with a stabilized 5 volts from the EML control unit.

The voltage signal at the control unit increases when the resistance of a selected position increases.

NOTE: Due to model years changes, switch position may vary.

CRUISE CONTROL OPERATION (GR II) E-38 VEHICLES

All functions of the cruise control system are incorporated in the EML IIIs control module. The cruise control main switch, mounted on the instrument panel, is a switched ground input wired directly to the EML control module. The multifunction steering wheel (E38 only) inputs are direct to the EML control module through a separate serial data bus.

The EML control module regulates the operation of the cruise control by regulating the position of the throttle valves as it did in the past. The new cruise control logic adopted with the GR II E 38 740i are incorporated in the EML control logic. The new control logic includes:
- Smoother acceleration under the RESUME feature
- Downshift on decel (down hill) to provide engine braking effect

The switching "OFF" priorities for cruise control operation are carried over from the GR II system.

The commands for cruise control operation are carried out according to the highest priority as follows:
5 - brake light switch directly from EML control module
4 - transmission in neutral from AGS control module over CAN
3 - "OFF" request from MFL steering wheel
2 - SET/Accelerate from MFL steering wheel
1 - Resume from MFL steering wheel

CRUISE CONTROL INDICATOR LAMP

The EML control module controls the cruise control indicator lamp in the instrument cluster. When the main switch is pressed, the indicator lamp is illuminated.
