Recall Campaign No. 98V-143, Transmission Position Switch
MODEL:
E39 - 528iA Produced 8/97 - 11/97
Situation:
The sealing material of the transmission gear position switch can develop leaks and allow water to enter the switch which can eventually result in an incorrect indication of the transmission gear position.
- Vehicle may fail to start
- Vehicle may start in gear
Affected Vehicles:
This recall involves E39 vehicles with M52 B28 engines which were produced from 8/97-11/97.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

Correction:
The transmission position switch on all affected vehicles will need to be checked. On some vehicles the position switch may have already been replaced and no further action will be required. If the latest version of the switch is not installed a new switch will need to be installed
Procedure:
Checking of transmission position switch:
1. With vehicle on lift, check if the position switch housing has a green dot.
2. IF A GREEN DOT IS located on the lower portion of the position switch housing (3) directly above the oil pan flange behind the shift lever (2) the switch will not need to be replaced.
NOTE:
A good switch will also have GM 96018469 stamped into the left side of the switch housing (1).
No further work is required, the campaign for this vehicle can be closed.
Replacing transmission position switch:
IF A GREEN DOT IS NOT located on the lower portion of the position switch housing (3r) directly above the oil pan flange behind the shift lever (2), the position switch will need to be replaced.
Replacing transmission position switch:
1. Move selector lever into position "P"
2. Hold clamping bushing (1) and loosen nut (2).
3. Hold cable (3) on hexagon (1) and loosen nut (2).
4. Pull cable (3) toward the rear and remove from bracket.
5. Loosen nut (1).
6. Remove shift lever (2).
Installation:
Tightening torque of nut ( = 10 Nm)
7. Disconnect cable connector, unfasten screw and remove connector bracket.
8. Unfasten screws and remove position switch from the manual shift valve shaft.
Installation:
9. Reinstall selector switch.
a. Move manual shift valve shaft into position "P".
b. Attach special tool 24 1 120 to the position switch (only possible in switch position "P").
c. Place position switch onto manual shift valve shaft with special tool 24 1 120 and tighten down.
d. Tightening torque 10 Nm.
e. Remove special tool 24 1 120 from position switch.
10. Reinstall connector bracket and reconnect cable connector.
11. Reinstall shift lever.
12. Reinstall shift cable.
13. Adjust shift lever:
Move selector lever into position "P"
Press cable in direction of arrow an release again.
Hold clamping bushing (1) and tighten nut (2).

Recall Label Instruction:
This Recall has been assigned code number 226 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD92-095) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 226 printed on the label and,
c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
