Timing Chain: Service and Repair

Prior to disconnecting fuel lines, disconnect master relay and carefully depressurize fuel system.

1. Mount engine on a suitable engine stand.
2. Loosen fuel line clamps, then remove pressure regulator vacuum hoses.
3. Remove injection pipe attaching bolts, then remove injection pipes with fuel injectors.
4. Remove distributor caps, then the throttle valve necks on manifold. During installation, torque to 7 ft. lbs.
5. Loosen nuts on manifold support, then remove noise guard.
6. Remove exhaust manifold, using extension tool No. 11 6 060 or equivalent.
7. Remove distributor rotor, then the adapter.
8. Remove take-up cover attaching bolts, then lift out radial oil seal.
9. Remove cylinder head cover rubber mount.
10. Remove cylinder head cover attaching bolts, then remove cover.
11. Remove upper timing case cover, then the timing case cover.
12. Depress valves, using compression tool No. 11 3 180 or equivalent, then remove rocker arms. Make sure cams are facing upwards toward cylinder head and ensure tool does not contact cam.
13. Position rocker arms aside in order to facilitate installation.
14. Remove hydraulic valve clearance compensators and guides for rocker arms. Place compensators in an upright position to prevent guides from falling into crankcase.
15. Place piston of No. 1 cylinder at top dead center on compression stroke.
16. Loosen timing chain, then the tensioning piston locknut.
17. Loosen tensioning piston adjusting screw, then carefully remove tensioning piston as piston is under spring pressure. Ensure to reassemble piston in exact order of disassembly, then torque to 29 ft. lbs.
18. Remove guider rail, covering chain recesses to prevent clips from falling into crankcase.
19. Remove camshaft sprocket attaching bolts from cylinders 1 through six.
20. Remove guide rail attaching bolt from cylinders 7 through 12, then pull guide rail from holder.
21. Remove camshaft sprocket attaching bolts from cylinders 7 through 12.
22. Remove timing chains.
