Removing And Installing Automatic Transmission

Note: After completing work, check transmission oil level and top up if necessary, refer to "Checking Oil Level In Automatic Transmission"

- Disconnect battery,




- Remove noise insulation cover.
- Remove complete exhaust system.




- Remove heat shield (1).




- Remove heat shield and brackets for left and right splash guards.




Cable clamping up to 8.95:
- Fit special tool 24 5 240 to the shift lever.

Note: Only possible to fit in "P" setting.

- Loosen nut (1).

Installation:
- Adjust shift lever. Adjustments



Cable clamping from 8.95:
- Brace clamping bush (1) and loosen nut (2).

Installation:
- Adjust shift lever. Adjustments




- Lift out retaining plate (1) with a screwdriver. Remove cable (2).




- Remove heat shield on left front axle support.
- Remove bracket for oil lines on engine oil pan.




- Place oil container below.
- Unfasten screw and remove oil lines.

Installation:
- Replace O-rings.




- Support transmission with special tool 00 2 030 / 24 0 170.




- Unclip cable for oxygen sensors on transmission crossmember.
- Unfasten screws and remove transmission crossmember.

Installation:
- Tightening Torque: 21 Nm

- Disconnect propeller shaft from transmission flange and tie up to one side. Service and Repair




- Unlock plug connection (1 & 2) and disconnect. Unclip cable on transmission case.




- Lift off cover.




- Pull off cable connector (1).

Caution! If the impulse sensor is fitted to a new transmission, the impulse sensor must be readjusted.




- Unfasten 4 retaining screws for torque converter with special tool 24 1 110.

Installation:
- Tightening Torque: 45 Nm




- Unscrew screw.
- Press guide tube for positive battery lead downwards slightly.




- Fit special tool 23 3 030 (M60/M62 engines) or 11 7 310 (M73 engine) between engine oil pan and front axle support.
- Move front wheels over to left lock.
- Lower transmission.




- Protect torque converter from slipping out.
- To do this, insert special tool 24 4 131/24 4 135 in opening of transmission housing and clamp torque converter in place.




- Unfasten screws.
- Pull transmission backwards and lower.

Installation:

- Tightening Torque:
Hex Screws M8 24 Nm
M10 45 Nm
M12 82 Nm
Torx Bolts M8 21 Nm
M10 42 Nm
M12 72 Nm




Installation:
- Install bolts (1) with narrow shoulder only with washers.
- Fit screws (2) with wide collar without any shims.




Installation:
- When installing the transmission, special tool 24 2 300 must be aligned with bore in drive plate.




Installation:
- Bore (1) in drive plate must be accessible from aperture in oil pan.




Installation:
- Screw special tool 24 2 300 into the threaded bore (1).
- If applicable, twist torque converter until bore with special tool 24 2 300 points downwards.




Installation:
- Check dowel sleeves.
- If necessary, remove dowel sleeves from transmission case and mount new dowel sleeves in engine block.
- Replace damaged dowel sleeves.
