SUBJECT:
Quality Monitoring M60 Oxygen Sensors
MODEL:
E34 and E38 with M60 B4O engines
Situation:
As a quality monitoring measure the oxygen sensors of the above listed models should be replaced with new sensors and the old sensors sent back to the Warranty Parts Return Center with a copy of any DME fault codes if present.
Vehicles Affected:
1995 model year E34 540i and E38 740i/iL vehicles with M60 B40 engines which were produced from 9/94 - 8/95 and currently being operated in southern California, Texas, Florida, Michigan and New Jersey.
In order to determine which vehicles are being monitored, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on a positive response of the system, follow the procedure outlined below.
Note:
Once the set quantity of oxygen sensors to be used for analysis is met all other vehicles listed will be removed from DCS indicating the end of this measure.
Procedure:
1. Inform the customer that the oxygen sensors (left and right) will be removed from the vehicle and obtain the customers consent.
2. Have the customer sign and date the form attached to this bulletin BEFORE you remove the oxygen sensors. The attached blank form should be copied as needed.
3. Read and print out DME fault codes if present.
Note:
Submit a copy of the DME Diagnosis Report and fault codes if present with the replaced sensors.
Test/hex code printout procedure:
Select "3 Service Functions" and right arrow button
Select "1 Test Code" and right arrow button
Select "Test Code R"
Select Print "Diagnostic Report"
4. Ignore any oxygen sensor fault codes if present.
5. Clear all fault codes stored in the DME.
6. Replace both oxygen sensors as outlined in the repair manual group 11 section 11 78 513.
Note:
Since the removed oxygen sensors will be used for further analysis avoid damage to the sensors during shipping by packing them into the boxes the new ones came in covering the tips with the plastic caps.
The boxes should also be labeled left and right depending on which side the sensors were installed on the vehicle.
