This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 54 03 98 dated July 1998 which should be removed and discarded from your S.I. binder. This revision describes how the sunroof module can be reprogrammed to prevent further occurrences of this problem.

Changes to this revision are identified by asterisks.

SUBJECT:
Sunroof Inoperative, or Lost Initialization

*MODEL:
E38 (7 Series) to 9/98, E39 (5 Series) to 3/98.*

Situation:
The sunroof is inoperative, or has lost its initialization. No faults are stored in the sunroof (SHD) module.

*Correction:
On a customer complaint basis, reprogram the sunroof module using DIS V 16.0, or later.

Procedure:
1. Connect vehicle to DIS, or MoDiC loaded with DIS V 16.0, or later.

2. Select "Coding/programming".

3. Select "ZCS Coding".

4. Select "E38", or "E39" (as appropriate).

5. Select "5. Service Measures".

6. Select "2. Slide/tilt sunroof".

7. Follow on-screen prompts to reprogram the sunroof module.

8. Reinitialize the sunroof module by pressing switch to "Tilt" and holding the switch in the "Tilt" position until the roof panel tilts a second time.

9. Check the operation of the sunroof.

10. Do not replace SHD module if all sunroof functions return to normal.*
