Procedure 4

Modification of steering column support tube bracket.





Gain access to the steering column support tube bracket by removing:

1. On-board computer or clock

2. Air conditioning control module (behind storage bin)

3. Cigarette lighter/storage bin assembly





Remove bolts holding support tube mounting bracket, and remove bracket.





Modify bracket by culling off the end as illustrated. Touch bare metal with paint.





Install modified bracket.

Tightening torque: 24 Nm

Reinstall all components at center console.

1993 Models Produced 9/92 - 11/92





Vehicles in this production period do not have the bracket referred to above. Replace the single mounting bolt with part number 07 12 4 203 573.

Recode ZAE control module; 1994 Models only.

Use only MoDIC Coding Diskette V11.2 to modify the deployment time of the ZAE control module using usual coding procedure. The new information is transmitted through # 19 Airbag in the recoding section.

Note:
ignition may not be turned off during recoding!

Load MoDiC with coding discs A and B.

- Connect MoDiC to vehicle's diagnostic connector.

- Turn on ignition.

- Select "Coding ZCS."

- Enter current date.

- Select "4 Series E36."

- Select "1 Recoding."

- Select "19 Airbag" and confirm - press "enter."

- Start automatic coding - press "Y."

- After recoding is complete (approx. 10 mm.), turn ignition off. Wait at least 10 seconds, then turn ignition on again.

- Turn ignition off and disconnect MoDiC.
