SRS - Sporadic Faults 04, 06
MODELS:
E32 and E34 Equipped with SRS System (produced from 5/88 through 1/89)
Situation:
SRS Control Units with manufacturing dates between 24 88 and 36 88 may have the following faults displayed as a sporadic fault even though there is no actual fault in the system.
Fault 04 - Driver's Airbag Supply Lead Defective
Fault 06 - Belt Tensioner Supply Lead Defective
Diagnostic Procedure:
1) Using the BMW Service Tester, print out the Control Unit Identification page and the fault report following this procedure:
Press the [R] button after the message "DRIVER'S AIRBAG INSTALLED IN CAR" appears on the tester screen. Wait until the printer stops (3 seconds) before proceding.
2) If these faults (04, 06) are shown as a permanent fault, proceed with the diagnostic procedures given on the tester.
These faults are not being set erroneously by the control unit as outlined in this bulletin.
3) If these faults (04, 06) are shown as a Sporadic fault, follow the diagnostic procedures given on the tester.
If the fault does not reoccur and the control unit's manufacturing date is between 24 88 and 36 88, replace the SRS Control Unit.
Note:
An 8 digit number will be found on one side of the control unit. The last four digits are the manufacturing date.
Warranty Information:
Claims for this repair will only be accepted if the following conditions are met:
^ The control unit's manufacturing date is between 24 88 and 36 88.
^ Fault 04 or 06 is set as a sporadic fault.
^ The Service Tester printout of the Identification page is included.
