SUBJECT:
Engine "Dieseling"

MODELS:

Correction:
Install updated purge control relay (P/N 13 90 1 311 772).

Special Note:
Early vehicles require two electrical circuits to be added to the purge relay multiplug.

Implementation:
Vehicles produced after 8/87, perform "A" procedure only.
Vehicles produced before 8/87, perform both "A" and "B" procedures.

Procedure "A":
(All vehicles)
- Loosen coolant expansion tank.
- Remove center and right side engine compartment bulkhead trim panels.
- Positively identify the purge, main and fuel pump relays (Refer to BMW ETM and the E30 repair manual, Page 12 105).
- Replace the present evaporative purge relay with the updated version.
- Reinstall engine compartment trim and tighten coolant expansion tank.

Procedure "B":
(Only vehicles produced before 8/87)
- Access and identify the relays as described in procedure "A".
- Remove present evaporative purge relay.
- Fabricate a B + cable using 170 mm x 0.5 mm red wire and a locking female miniconnector (P/N 81 24 9 408 114 from BMW Electrical Repair Kit).
CAUTION:
The B + circuit is unfused! Do not allow tools or metal objects to short this circuit to ground.
- Install the B + locking connector and cable into the # 30 position of the purge relay multiplug. See attached illustration.
- Using a red Scotch lock, connect the end of the B + cable to the fuel pump relay B + wire (red).
- Fabricate a B - cable using 100 mm x 0.5 mm brown wire and a locking female connector (P/N 81 24 9 408 105 from BMW Electrical Repair Kit).
- Install the B - locking connector and cable into the # 31 position of the purge relay multiplug. See attached illustration.
- Using a red Scotch lock connect the end of B - cable to the main relay ground wire (brown).

Verification:
All updated vehicles should be checked for correct purge valve operation.

The system is functioning correctly when the purge valve is powered closed for approximately 10 seconds after the engine is switched OFF.
