SUBJECT: Dieseling on Engine Shutdown and Possible Rough Engine Idle

MODEL: M3

Situation: If the engine continues to run after shut-off or idles roughly under normal operating conditions, please check for the following conditions:

Evaporative Purge Control

The evaporative purge system should be updated per S.I. 13 07 88 (1700). If the purge system has been updated the purge control relay and valve should be checked for proper operation.

Throttle Housing Base Gaskets

Verify that the throttle housing base gaskets are sealing properly, especially on vehicles produced prior to July 1988.

Crankcase Ventilation Sealing

The crankcase ventilation system should be inspected for leakage. The pressed-in fitting in the inlet plenum (see drawing) may be loose creating an unmetered air leak. If this occurs the fitting should be repaired (whenever possible) using BMW P/N 81 22 9 407 394 or a locally available epoxy cement e.g. liquid steel/JB weld, etc.
