SUBJECT: Engine Oil Leakage

MODEL: E32 (with M70 Engine)

Situation: Oil leakage at timing chain housing upper/lower mating surfaces.

Cause: "Chain Port" gaskets displaced.

Correction: Repair "A" - Early production engine
^ Replace timing case cover.
^ Replace timing case.
^ Reseal with improved sealing gaskets.

Repair "B" - Later production engine
^ Reseal with improved sealing gaskets.

Implementation:
Repair "A" - Chassis number range of early production engine 276 5001 - 276 5978

Repair "B" - Chassis number range of later production engine 276 5979 - 276 7181

Customer Relations
Information: Using the retail sales records as a guide, all customers with vehicles in the listed chassis number range should be contacted in accordance with your available parts supply. Further, to minimize any inconvenience to the 750iL customer, service capacity should be reviewed prior to making appointments for this important update.

Verification
Procedure: 1. Verify that the "B" pillar does not have a code number 13 Service Action Label. The presence of a code number 13 Service Action Label indicates that the vehicle has been updated previously. DO NOT PROCEED FURTHER.

2. Verify that the vehicle chassis number is either the early or later chassis number range.

3. Verify that all parts are on hand prior to disassembly.

Repair "A", early engine = timing case, cover, all gaskets and related hardware (refer to Parts Information).

Repair "B", later engine = all gaskets and related hardware only (refer to Parts Information).

Special Note:
Final Note: The BMW 750iL concept attaches significant importance to the visual appearance of the V12 engine.

The 750iL owners fully expect a clean and tidy appearance after major engine repair work of this type.

Therefore additional time has been allowed (see labor allowance) for the cleaning and preservation of the engine and engine compartment upon completion of this repair work. When cleaning the engine, every effort should be made to remove all oil residue; however, high pressure steam cleaning is expressly not recommended.



Service Action Label
Instructions: This Service Action has been assigned code number 13. After the prescribed work has been performed, obtain a label (P/N 01 99 9 750 968) and

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label;

b) punch out code number 13 printed on the label;

c) bend label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix it to the "B" pillar (on driver's front door) as shown.

Information: This repair is reimbursable under the terms and provisions of the BMW 3 Year/ 36,000 Mile Limited Warranty.
