SUBJECT: Idle speed too low with headlights/parking lights on

MODELS: 528eA with Motronic M1.1 (produced from 3/87 to 5/87)

Complaint: With the gear selector in any drive position and the foot brakes applied, the idle speed drops below specifications when the headlights/parking lights are turned on.

Cause: Missing diode in transmission wiring harness (P/N 61 12 1 380 220).

Correction Install diode as outlined below.

Procedure: Note: For instructions regarding removal and installation of steering wheel and instrument cluster refer to Repair Manual.

1. Remove steering wheel.
2. Remove instrument cluster.
3. Disconnect plug for gear selection range displays on instrument cluster.

4. Cut off blue/yellow wire (Pin 4) at a distance of 2 to 3 inches from the plug.
5. Mount flat male connector (P/N 61 13 1 351 675) to cable end at the plug.
6. Attach insulating sleeve (P/N 61 13 1 350 068) to flat male connector.

7. Connect diode to flat male connector.
8. Mount female connector (P/N 61 13 1 362 405) to the other cable end.
9. Attach insulating sleeve (P/N 61 13 1 362 371) to female connector and plug it to male contact of diode.

10. Affix diode to wiring harness with insulating tape.
11. Reconnect plug to instrument cluster.
12. Re-install instrument cluster.

13. Re-install steering wheel.
14. Check repair quality.
