SUBJECT: Brake Lining Wear Warning System
MODELS: All so equipped
System
Operation: The brake lining wear warning system alerts the driver to the fact that:
a) the brake linings (pads) will shortly need replacement. This "advance warning" is displayed to the driver by the red BRAKE LINING light in the instrument panel coming on only when braking.
b) the brake linings (pads) have worn to a point where replacement is necessary. This is displayed by the red BRAKE LINING light staying on continuously.
Situation: The "advance warning" can sometimes lead to customer confusion about the necessity for brake replacement. Therefore, this feature has been eliminated on the 1986 models. It can be easily deleted on earlier models (see Modification Procedure) should a customer wish to have it done. However, it is recommended that this be done only after the purpose of the "advance warning" feature has been explained to the customer and noted on the Repair Order.
Note
Be sure to emphasize the possibility of major damage to the brake discs if the BRAKE LINING warning light is ignored.
Some customers may then decide to retain the "advance warning" feature.
Modification
Procedure: 1) Remove LF (left front) wheel.
2) Remove the brown ground wire from the mounting stud (found on the back side of the disc shield).
3) Cut the brown wire where it enters the wiring harness (see drawing).
4) Replace wheel.
5) If the car has 4-wheel disc brakes, perform these same steps (1-4) on the rear sensor at the RR (right rear) brake assembly.
