Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Thrust Plate (VW 401)

• Thrust Plate (VW 402)

• Thrust Disc (VW 412)

• Press Tube (2040)

• Tube 60 mm Dia. (VW 415 A)

• Punch (VW 409)

Procedure






- Remove the center differential housing. Refer to => [ Center Differential Housing, Transmission Installed ] Center Differential Housing, Transmission Installed.

- Remove the locking ring - A - on the transmission output shaft and the ball bearing locking ring - B -.

- Remove the transmission output shaft from the center differential housing using the (VW 409).






- Pry out the shaft seal.






• Place a pry lever underneath - A - to protect the housing.

- Ball bearing, transmission output shaft with splines, removing






- Ball bearing, transmission output shaft with splines, installing






• The shoulder on the (VW 415 A) - arrow - faces the (VW 412).

- Install the ball bearing locking ring - B -.






• Ignore - A -.

- Install the transmission output shaft into the center differential housing using the (VW 412).






- Install the locking ring - arrow - into the groove in the transmission output shaft.






- Install the center differential housing. Refer to => [ Center Differential Housing, Transmission Installed ] Center Differential Housing, Transmission Installed.

- Shaft seal, transmission output shaft with splines, installing, refer to => [ Transmission Output Shaft with Splines, Vehicles without Vibration Damper ] Transmission Output Shaft With Splines, Vehicles Without Vibration Damper.

- Fill gear oil in transfer case. Refer to => [ Transfer Case Gear Oil, Draining and Filling ] Transfer Case Gear Oil, Draining and Filling.
