- Secure the ATF container and the (VAS 6262 A) on the vehicle as high as possible; for the correct ATF specification, refer to the Parts Catalog.
• For vehicles with a 12-cylinder engine, the space between the exhaust system and the sealing plug - A - for ATF control and the fill opening is very small.
• Extra work steps must be undertaken because of the risk of getting burned by the exhaust system.
• It has been designed with an outer hex head to make it easier to assemble the ATF-control and fill-opening plug.
• In addition, the right cylinder bank must be switched off during the ATF-level test so that the exhaust system can cool down. This is the only way the ATF level can be tested and correctly adjusted.
• The procedure and checking the conditions involved in switching the right cylinder bank off will be introduced and tested on the vehicle diagnostic tester in "Guided Functions".
Introduce the ATF-Level Test Via the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
- On the vehicle diagnostic tester under Guided Functions in the vehicle system 02 - Transmission Electronics the "Guided Functions" 02 - ATF-Level Test with 12 Cyl. Select Engine.
Conditions:
• Follow all of the instructions regarding the vehicle diagnostic tester very carefully so that the "Guided Functions" can be successfully concluded.
The vehicle diagnostic tester will automatically select the proper way to switch off the right cylinder bank, which can occur in various ways, depending on the software version. Various decisions must be made during the process below:
• Manual shut-off via mechanical intervention, includes pulling the crankcase housing ventilation hose off
• Electronic shut-off, which is governed by the software: the ATF-level test can continue to be carried out via the vehicle diagnostic tester
Shutting Off the Right Cylinder Bank Manually
- Carefully remove the engine cover from the four fasteners one after the other - arrows -. Do not jerk or pull it to one side.
- Run the engine at idle.
• Hose - 1 - for the crankcase ventilation must be removed to switch off the right cylinder bank if the engine is running. The vehicle diagnostic tester will indicate the right time to remove the hose. The exhaust temperature has to be the proper temperature to do this. But at the same time, the ATF temperature cannot be too high, either.
- Remove the hose for crankcase ventilation - 1 - by pressing on the release buttons - A - slowly removing the hose in direction of - arrow -.
• The Engine Control Module (ECM) will store a fault entry in the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory when the crankcase ventilation hose - 1 - is removed. At the end, the vehicle diagnostic tester will automatically delete the fault stored in the DTC memory via the "Guided Functions" that is currently running.
- Check the ATF level and correct if necessary.
ATF, Checking Level and Correcting
• Tightening specification, refer to => [ Draining and Filling Plugs Overview ] Draining and Filling Plugs Overview.
• The ATF level is checked at the ATF check and fill hole - A -.

• Replace the plug for the ATF check and fill hole.
- Run the engine at idle.
- Follow the instructions in the vehicle diagnostic tester exactly.
• Keeping the brake pedal depressed will cause the transmission to use the vehicle diagnostic tester to check, shift through and maintain each of the "P", "R", "N", "D/S" gears. This has to be done to distribute the ATF evenly in the transmission.
• This also causes the ATF temperature to display.
Danger of getting burned.
• Wear safety gloves.
- Use compressed air as an added means of cooling off both right front exhaust pipes that are near the locking bolt for ATF control and the fill opening, and carefully check the temperature in the front exhaust pipes.
• Switching off the right cylinder bank will also help the exhaust system cool down by itself. Compressed air must also be used to bring the ATF temperature down faster, so that it does not exceed 35° C (95 °F).
• Both right front exhaust pipes have to be cooled to the point that there is no longer any danger of getting burned by them. If the front exhaust pipes do not get noticeably cooler, then use the vehicle diagnostic tester to check the shut-off conditions; repeat the shut-off process, if necessary.
- Place the (V.A.G 1782) under the transmission.
Danger of eye injury.
• Wear protective goggles.
- When the ATF reaches 35 °C (95 °F), remove the sealing plug for the ATF check and fill hole - A - and drain any excess ATF.

• If no ATF flows out of the ATF-check and fill opening before the ATF has reached 40 °C (104 °F), then top off the ATF.
• The ATF check and fill hole must be sealed off again before the ATF reaches 45°C (104 °F) (50°C (122 °F) for hot climate countries).
- Use (T10455) and a torque wrench to tighten the new sealing plug - A - for ATF check and fill hole.
Additional work steps are listed below for vehicles where the right cylinder bank has been shut off manually.
- Connect the hose - 1 - for the crankcase ventilation and have it secured.
- In order to prevent damage, do not hit the engine cover with your fist or tool.
- First, use both hands to press down on the engine cover on the back on the ball pins; then, use both hands to press down on the front on the ball pins, this time, in the opposite direction of the - arrow -.
All Vehicles
- End "Guided Functions" 02 - ATF Level Check with 12-Cylinder Engine (Repair Group 37) on the vehicle diagnosis tester according to the instructions.
- Clean the front exhaust pipes and transmission and completely remove ATF residue.
- Install the noise insulation..
The ATF level test is now completed.
