Left Timing Chain Cover

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Hand drill with plastic brush attachment

Protective eyewear

Sealant

Removing

During installation, all cable ties must be installed at the same location.

- Remove the engine compartment crossmember: R8 Coupe => [ Engine Compartment Crossmember ] Engine Assembly

- Remove electrical connectors from bracket and disconnect:





1. For oxygen sensor 2 after catalytic converter (G131)

2. For heated oxygen sensor 2 (G108)

- Free up the wires to the oxygen sensors.

- Remove the clamp screw - 2 -.





Ignore - 1 -.

- Remove the clamp screw - 1 -.





- Loosen the hose clamp, disconnect the vacuum line - 2 - and move it to the side.

- Disconnect vacuum hose - 2 -.





- Remove the bolts - 1 - and move the secondary air injection left combination valve to the side.

- Remove bolts - 1 to 8 -.





Due to the difficult accessibility, the bolt - 1 - can only be removed with pliers.

- Remove the bracket - arrow A - and - arrow B -.

- Remove the timing chain left cover from the bond.

Installing

CAUTION!
Risk of contaminating lubricating system.

Cover open parts of engine.

CAUTION!
Risk of eye injury.

Wear safety glasses.

- Remove the sealant residue on the cover for the timing chain, cylinder block and cylinder head, for example using a rotating plastic brush.





- Clean the sealing surfaces; they must be free of oil and grease.

Note the expiration date of the sealing compound.

- Cut the tube nozzle at the front marking (nozzle diameter approximately 2 mm).





CAUTION!
The lubrication system could be plugged with excess sealant.

Do not apply sealant bead thicker than indicated.

- Apply a sealant bead - arrow - to the clean sealing surface of the timing chain left cover as shown in the illustration.





Sealant bead thickness: 2.5 mm

The timing chain cover must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the sealant

- Position the timing chain left cover and the bracket - arrow A - and - arrow B -.





- Replace the bolt - 6 - with a hex collar bolt.

- Tighten the bolts => [ Left Timing Chain Cover, Tightening

The rest of the installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:

- Install the left secondary air injection combination valve. Refer to => [ Secondary Air Injection Left Combination Valve ] Secondary Air Injection Left Combination Valve.

- Install the engine compartment crossmember: R8 Coupe => [ Engine Compartment Crossmember ] Engine Assembly.
