Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- And Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor - V101-, Checking
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Multimeter V.A.G 1526 B or V.A.G 1526 A
- Voltage tester V.A.G 1527 B
- Connector test kit V.A.G 1594 C or V.A.G 1594 A
- Test box 1598/31
- Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A with diagnostic cable VAS 5051/1
Work sequence
- Connect Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A and select vehicle system "01 - engine electronics". Ignition must be switched on
Display on VAS 5051 A:
- In selection - 1 -, click on function "03 - output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)".
- Press button repeatedly until Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- is activated.
- Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- - item 2 - (in electronics box, in plenum chamber) must engage and Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101- must run in intervals.
- End function "03 - output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)" by pressing button.
- Select "06 - End Output".
- Switch ignition off.
A. If relay does not trigger:
- Check voltage supply of Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299-
- Check activation of Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299-
B. If relay triggers, but Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101- does not run:
- Check voltage supply for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101-.
- Checking voltage supply for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299-
- Fuse in fuse holder -S234- (position - 34 - ) OK
- Switch ignition off.
- Pull off rubber seal of plenum chamber cover in direction of - arrow -
- Remove plenum chamber cover - 1 - toward front.
- Pry off both covers - 3 - using a screwdriver.
- Loosen hex nuts - 4 - by several turns.
- Loosen wiper arm - 2 - from wiper axle by lightly tilting.
- Remove hex nuts completely and remove wiper arms.
- Disconnect securing clips - 1 - and remove cowl grille - 5 -.
- Remove cover for electronics box in plenum chamber - arrows -.
- Pry off Engine Control Module (ECM) retaining bracket - arrows - using a screwdriver and set control module aside.
- If installed, unclip Transmission Control Module (TCM) retaining bracket and set control module aside.
- Remove Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- - item 2 -.
- Connect multimeter for voltage measurement as follows.

-8 - Engine Ground (GND)
Specified value: Approx. battery voltage
If specified value is not obtained:
- Perform following tests marked with dots:
- Check Fuse for secondary air pump -S130- in electronics box plenum chamber, position - B -.
- Check wiring connection from battery + (terminal 30) via Fuse for secondary air pump -S130- to Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- (in relay and fuse carrier in electronics box, plenum chamber, position - 2 - ) for open circuit.
- Connect multimeter for voltage measurement as follows.

-4 - Engine Ground (GND)
- Operate starter briefly.
- Specified value: Approx. battery voltage
If specified value is not obtained:
- Check wiring connection from Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- (in 3-socket relay carrier in electronics box, plenum chamber) via Fuse in fuse holder -S234- (position 34) to Fuel Pump (FP) Relay -J17- for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
- Repair wiring connection if necessary.
Checking activation of Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299-
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299-.
- Connect voltage tester V.A.G 1527 B as follows:

-6 - B+
- Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A connected, "Vehicle Self-Diagnosis" "01 Engine electronics" selected. Ignition must be switched on for this.
Display on VAS 5051 A:
- In selection - 1 -, click on function "03 - output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)".
- Press button repeatedly until Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- is activated.
- LED must blink
- End function "03 - output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)" by pressing button.
- Select "06 - End Output".
- Switch ignition off.
If LED does not blink:
- Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to wiring harness connectors, Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected. Connect Ground (GND) clip at test box to Ground (not visible in illustration). Test Box, Connecting For Wiring and Component Test
CAUTION: To avoid damaging electronic components, set measuring range before connecting test leads and observe all test requirements.
- Check following wiring connection for open circuit and short circuit to Ground (GND) and B+:

- Repair wiring connection if necessary.
If no malfunctions are detected:
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299-.
- Remove quick-release screws - 1 -, remove screws - 2 - and remove sound insulation.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector - 1 - at Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101-.
NOTE: Disregard - 2 -.
- Connect voltage tester V.A.G 1527 B between terminal - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A connected, "Vehicle Self-Diagnosis" "01 Engine electronics" selected. Ignition must be switched on for this.
Display on VAS 5051 A:
- In selection - 1 -, click on function "03 - output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)".
- Press button repeatedly until Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- is actuated.
- LED must blink
- End function "03 - output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)" by pressing button.
- Select "06 - End Output".
- Switch ignition off.
If LED does not blink:
- Check wiring connection from terminal 2 of harness connector to Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- (in relay carrier in electronics box, plenum chamber, position 2) for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
- Check wiring connection from terminal 1 of harness connector to Ground (GND) for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
- Repair wiring connection if necessary.
If no malfunctions are detected:
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump.
