Shift Interlock Cable: Service and Repair

Locking cable, removing and installing

Removing

Caution: Follow steps required when disconnecting battery.

Note: The battery is located in the rear compartment, in the spare wheel well.

- Disconnect ground strap on battery (in rear compartment) with ignition switched off.

- Remove airbag module on driver's side and steering wheel.

- Remove trim (left side) beneath instrument panel.

- Remove steering column trim.

- Unscrew handle for adjusting steering column height and position.
- Turn ignition key to "ignition on" position.
- Shift selector lever into "P" position.





- Pull out clip - 2 - for locking cable - 3 -
- Pull locking cable out of steering lock - 1 -.
- Remove selector lever handle
- Remove rear center console.





- Lift up locking lever - A - and pull off locking cable in direction of arrow.

Note: Do not loosen bolt - B - !

- Pull locking cable out of instrument panel.

Installing
Perform installation in reverse sequence of removal. Note the following:
^ The locking cable must not be kinked.





- Route locking cable - arrow - from steering lock to selector mechanism in such a way that it passes behind wiring harness - 1 - and underneath footwell air outlet - 2 and carpet - 3 -.
- Shift selector lever into "P" position.





- Lift locking lever - A - and fit locking cable in opposite direction of arrow. If necessary, loosen bolt - B - .





- Push locking cable into steering lock.
- The flat side of the locking cable points downward.
- Fit clip - 2 - of locking cable - 3 -

Installed position
- Fit clip from above. Angled ends of clip must point towards steering lock.
- Ensure that clip is properly engaged.
- Adjust locking cable -
- Check operation of ignition key withdrawal lock
- Install rear center console.

- Install selector lever handle
- Install trim (left side) beneath instrument panel.

compartments/covers
- Install steering column trim.
- Install handle for adjusting steering column height and position.
- Install steering wheel and airbag.
- Connect ground strap to battery.
- Follow steps required after connecting battery.
