Accelerator Pedal (AP) Cable, Servicing - Vehicles With Mechanical Accelerator Mechanism

Accelerator pedal cable, removing and installing

CAUTION:
- The accelerator pedal cable can kink very easily. Be very careful when handling the cable during installation.
- A single small kink can cause the cable to break while driving.
- An accelerator pedal cable that has been kinked should be discarded

NOTE: When installing the accelerator pedal cable, make sure that it is properly aligned between the supports and attachment points.

Removing
- Remove driver's side storage shelf.







- Disconnect accelerator pedal cable end -1- at top of accelerator pedal -2-.







- Pull rubber gasket off toward front -arrows-.
- Remove plenum chamber cover -1- toward front.







- Remove engine cover -arrows-.







- Disconnect vacuum line -1- at vacuum unit for cruise control.
- Remove bolts -arrows- for bracket of vacuum unit -2- for cruise control.
- Disconnect actuation rod at throttle valve control module.







- Remove clip -3- for accelerator pedal cable sleeve.
- Disconnect nipple -1- at accelerator pedal cable end from cable disk.
- Remove accelerator pedal cable together with rubber bearing -4- from support -2-.

Vehicles with automatic transmission







- Disconnect harness connector -2- at kickdown switch.

All:
- Remove clip -1- at accelerator pedal cable support or kickdown switch.

NOTE: For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, the clip is located behind the bulkhead.







- Turn accelerator pedal cable attachment approx. 1/4 -turn (90 degrees) counter clockwise -arrow- -1- and pull from bulkhead -arrow- -2-.
- Remove accelerator pedal cable.

Installing
- Observe notes and CAUTIONS.

Vehicles with manual transmission







- Push accelerator pedal cable together with support -3- and accelerator pedal cable attachment -1- from engine compartment through both bulkheads in direction of arrow.
- Secure accelerator pedal cable support with clamp -2- from behind bulkhead in plenum chamber.

Vehicles with automatic transmission







- Push accelerator pedal cable together with support -3- and attachment -1- from plenum chamber to outside through bulkhead and to rear through bulkhead toward interior of car.
-Arrow- shows direction of installation.







- Secure accelerator pedal cable support with clip -1- from in front of bulkhead.
- Reconnect harness connector for kickdown switch -2-.

All:







- Install accelerator attachment after inserting it into bulkhead by turning it clockwise in direction of arrow -1- approx. 1/4 -turn (90 degrees) -arrow- -2-.

The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal, however note the following:
- Adjust accelerator pedal cable.
